TMZ delivered a message to the public over the weekend that isn’t rooted in anything happening at the courthouse in Los Angeles and it’s not the first time.
The celebrity news site has made it seem that attorneys are meeting so that Spears could be released from the conservatorhip she is under but none of TMZ’s stories have been based on courtroom fact. Last week TMZ said that attorneys in the case were in the courtroom “right now” talking about ending the conservatorship but that wasn’t quite true. According to the court’s online records last week’s hearing was related to scheduled accounting matters.
No motions have been made and no documents have been filed to indicate that the conservatorship is coming to an end soon.
“If there is a motion to terminate there would a document on file. There isn’t any,” says Vania Stuelp today.
Stuelp also says that if there were proceedings going on to terminate the conservatorship that she would expect to be notified.
Stuelp is a deputy public information officer of the Los Angeles Superior Court who works with the Hon. Reva Goetz. The Hon. Goetz has presided over Spears’conservatorship proceedings since its onset two years ago.
The sole matter on the court’s docket today remains a proceeding scheduled for Dec. 22. It involves a motion by Geraldine Wyle, an attorney for the conservatorship, to seal some documents and to redact an earlier filing that listed Britney Spears as deceased.
The hearing on Dec. 22 is a continuation from last month. The Los Angeles Superior Court online case summary had described that proceeding as, “Motion – other. Notice of motion and motion to confirm sealing order pursuant to procedures regarding sealing and redaction; declaration of Geraldine A. Wyle in support thereof.”
No new documents have been filed since Nov. 6, 2009 and that was the, “Fourth Supplement to First Account Current and Report of James P. Spears and Andrew M. Walltet, Co-Conservators of the Estate,” confirms Stuelp.
Harvey Levin, founder of TMZ, has appeared many times on CNN as a subject matter expert on Spears’ life and thinking. On Dec. 3, Levin and Mike Walters, another frequent contributor to an online questions and answers show, left viewers back at TMZ to believe that attorneys were meeting “right now” in court to talk about ending the conservatorship.
Spears’ fan sites began airing the footage in unison yesterday with declarations that the conservatorship was ending. Three sites, Britney Addiction, Breatheheavy and Poor Britney interpreted Levin’s claims with varying opinion.
TMZ furthered their claims today releasing another story detailing the end of the conservatorship. They said that according to their sources that the conservatorship over Britney the person might end but not Britney the business.
The last conservatorship review was canceled as there was nothing to talk about, said Stuelp in August 2009. That review would have involved a review and decision by Judge Goetz as to whether Spears would be allowed to testify in a case in Florida. That case was settled and dismissed in July. No conservatorship reviews have been scheduled since.
The public may see what is happening in the court by visiting the Los Angeles court online. The case number is BP108870. The case number involving Kevin Federline, Spears’ex-husband, and their children is BD455662. Spears currently has no legal custody of her children. She received a visitation-only arrangement under the conservatorship.
